How Stainless Steel Coils are Manufactured

We receive many questions about the production of stainless steel coils as leading stainless steel suppliers in China. This blog will provide a brief overview of the coil production process, from melting raw materials to precision rolled and finished.

The chemistry required to make stainless steel coil is created by expert melting and metallurgy processes. Coils are made of a variety of stainless steel grades, including:

Austenitic stainless steel grades such as 201, 316, and 321.

Ferritic grades such as 430 stainless

Duplex and Super Alloys

We can alloy stainless steel to the desired properties by controlling inputs and melting temperatures.

Primary Steelmaking

The majority of stainless steel is made from recycled scrap metal that has been melted and alloyed. Electric arc furnaces melt scrap metal quickly, and proprietary fluxes remove impurities. To create the desired grade, alloying elements such as chromium and nickel are added.

The stainless steel is then cast in large rectangular slabs, or billets. Using primary rolling and heating, thinner cross sections are created at this stage. This breakdown rolling is the starting point for coil manufacturing.

Continuous Casting

Continuous casting is another way to make stainless steel coil. Instead of slabs the liquid steel is solidified to a continuous strand which is then immediately rolled. Continuous cast coils often require less downstream processing.

Heat and Hot Rolling

In many mills, slabs or billets are heated to more than 2150degF using massive furnaces. The ductility is restored for rolling and forming. The steel is hot-rolled on successive rolling mills to reduce the thickness and lengthen it into strips.

The microstructure of stainless steel is formed during hot rolling, and it also imparts strength. Hot rolling is done in mills that maintain tight tolerances on thickness, surface quality, and shape.

Pickling and Annealing

After hot rolling, strips of stainless steel undergo annealing. The steel is softened by heating it again at 1900degF. This allows for better formability when cold rolling. The annealing process also improves properties such as ductility, corrosion resistance and ductility.

Pickling is followed by acid baths to remove surface scales and iron oxides. Pickling thoroughly removes impurities before cold rolling.

Cold Rolling

Precision roller pressures can further reduce the thickness of stainless steel strips. Cold rolling improves surface finish, and allows for precise tolerances. Mills can roll in a variety of gauges and thicknesses. Cold work hardening increases the steel’s hardness.

Cold rolling can be followed by intermediate annealing to improve ductility and prevent cracking. The final cold reduction passes achieve the tightest tolerances.

Finishing processes

Stainless steel strips are subjected to final processing after rolling.

Shearing strips into specified lengths or coil dimensions

The surface finish and flatness of the surface can be improved by leveling.

Surface treatments such as brushing and mirror polishing

Passivation enhances corrosion resistance

Inspection by the customer ensures that quality standards are met

Quality control and testing procedures are used throughout the coil production process to ensure that the required chemical properties, mechanical properties and surface quality as well as dimensional precision is achieved.
